"spidey"

a letter to the tiny spider that lives in my shower:

hi!

i hope you like it up there in that corner, spidey. you're really good at getting out of the way of the water once it starts. i hope i give you enough of a head start to get up there. it seems like i do, so that's good.

little spidey, what do you do during the day? or at night, i wonder? i imagine that you go on adventures around the bathroom. maybe you even venture into my bedroom and look around in there. but it's nice to see you back in the shower every morning. one day i didn't see you at first and it was pretty upsetting. i was late to work because i waited 20 minutes to turn on the shower! i knew you could be anywhere and i didn't want to wash you down the drain. i don't blame you though. i was just happy when you appeared. right up in your corner like usual. that was a relief.

i wonder what you eat. sometimes i see fruit flies in the kitchen - maybe they fly back to my room and you eat them. once, i saw a really big fly in noah's room and i imagined that you lured it to my bathroom and ate it. it was probably too big for you, tiny spidey, but maybe not. maybe you ate it for dinner. that must have been a good dinner.

anyway, i hope you're having a good day while i'm at work, spidey. i'll see you when i get home.

love, mary

VERY DISTURBING UPDATE ON SPIDEY:

i must regretfully inform you that i have not seen spidey for two days. the day before yesterday i put a bunch of my plants in my shower to water them (the man at the plant shop told me they really like that. and they do!). i saw spidey in his corner when i watered them, then i left them to sit overnight and dry off in the shower. the next morning spidey was gone. there's a chance spidey got confused and crawled into one of the plants. maybe he lives in there now, but i can't be sure.

i will miss you, tiny spidey. at least we have your paint animal to remember you by.

love, mary
